Frequent Urination / Overactive Bladder (OAB)
What is it?
The prostate is a small gland found in men that is located below the bladder and surrounds the urethra (the tube that carries urine out of the body). As men age, the prostate gland may gradually enlarge. This condition is known as Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH). When the prostate becomes enlarged, it can press against the urethra and affect the normal flow of urine. This may lead to urinary problems known as Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms (LUTS). This condition is commonly seen in men after the age of 40–50 years.
Main Symptoms
- Difficulty starting urination
- Weak urine stream
- Interrupted or stop-start urine flow
- Feeling that the bladder is not completely empty
- Frequent urination
Possible Causes
- Increasing age
- Hormonal changes
- Family history of prostate problems
- Obesity
- Lack of physical activity
- Diabetes and heart disease
Diagnosis
To determine the exact cause, doctors may recommend the following tests:
- Urine test
- Blood test (PSA – Prostate Specific Antigen)
- Ultrasound KUB / Prostate
- Post-void residual urine measurement
In complex cases:
- Uroflowmetry (urine flow rate test)
- Cystoscopy
- MRI Prostate
Treatment
Treatment depends on the severity of symptoms and the size of the prostate.
1. Lifestyle & Behavioral Changes
For mild symptoms, lifestyle changes can provide significant relief.
- Avoid excessive fluid intake at night
- Reduce caffeine and alcohol consumption
- Exercise regularly
- Follow a scheduled urination routine
- Maintain a healthy weight
2. Medicines
If symptoms worsen, doctors may prescribe medications.
- Alpha-blockers
Relax the muscles of the prostate and bladder neck
Improve urine flow - 5-alpha reductase inhibitors
Help gradually reduce the size of the prostate
3. Surgical Treatment
If medications do not provide relief or the condition becomes severe, surgery may be required.
- TURP (Transurethral Resection of the Prostate)
The excess prostate tissue is removed to improve urine flow - Laser Prostate Surgery
Laser technology is used to remove or reduce prostate tissue
